Liberals may try to argue that scientific studies show that gay people are born that way.

If that is true, then racists must also be born that way and racist lifestyles should be accommodated.

But fortunately gays and racists are not born that way. Only junk science supports that idea. The reason gays and racists are not "born that way" is easy to understand. It starts with understanding that it's a fairly normal human instinct to prefer the familiar instead of the different.

Individuals personal experiences cause them to associate good or bad feelings toward things. They will accept and reject things based on the feelings they associate with them. The racist may have learned to reject a different race based on awkward or tense interactions with people of a different race. They may contrast this with having experienced mostly congenial interactions with people of the same race. A segregated society is very conducive to promoting these types of experiences.

In the same way, the gay may learn to associate pleasure with their own anatomy during their sexual development. And if these experiences are combined with some type of awkward or uncomfortable interaction with members of the opposite gender, the development of a homosexual orientation is possible.

After experiencing negative events or environments as suggested, the racist or gay is likely to become more defensive and fearful of the differences they perceive. This results in self-limiting behavior in regards to exposing themselves to new experiences with the things they fear. And self-limitation and rejection of the things they fear, combined with the pursuit of the familiar, is a self-reinforcing process. The person caught in this process limits their opportunity to broaden their experiences and face their fears and overcome their limitation.

But racism and homosexuality can also be nurtured from more innocuous circumstances. Racist and gay feelings are rooted in an aversion to some characteristic of other people that is different from themselves. At some point in everyone's development they can become accustomed to other peoples skin color or facial features appearing a certain way or they can equate sexual pleasure and attraction with certain anatomical characteristics. But if they are particularly closed minded or emotionally limited and begin resisting exposure to things they are unaccustomed, they are less likely to become comfortable and accepting of natural differences.
