No, gays should not be protected by civil rights laws, because establishing gay rights is the equivalent of establishing racist rights. The idea that the rights of gays should be encouraged and promoted is as offensive as promoting and encouraging the rights of racists.
Protecting racists leads to the promotion of racism. Sheltering racists from interaction with people of different races leads to segregation. And segregation leads to a sense of superiority of the racist which encourages more hostility and discrimination. It is a reinforcing process that builds upon itself.
In the same way, protecting gays leads to separation and deprivation of growth experiences gays which leads to fear, hostility and discrimination. Racists and gays will never have their minds opened and learn to appreciate the differences of race and gender if they are encouraged to segregate. Integration is needed for them to overcome their limitations.
